Description
Leonhart Fuchs – De Historia Stirpium: The Most Famous Herbal of the Renaissance
Leonhart Fuchs (1501–1566), one of the "fathers of botany," created the most important herbal of his time with De Historia Stirpium. Printed in Basel in 1542, it describes 343 medicinal plants – from native herbs to exotic species – and is richly illustrated with over 500 masterfully colored woodcuts. Each plant is depicted in detail from root to flower.
Fuchs' work was the standard reference for herbal medicine in Europe for centuries. A German edition (New Kreüterbuch) was published as early as 1543, making his botanical insights accessible to a wider audience. With his systematic approach and precise representation of plants, Fuchs laid the foundation for modern botany.
