Around 1420, Margaret of Burgundy commissioned this magnificent Book of Hours – likely as a wedding gift for her husband Arthur III, Duke of Brittany. With 468 pages, 60 full-page miniatures, over 400 scenes, and countless golden initials, it is one of the most spectacular masterpieces of Parisian book painting.
Several renowned artists contributed to its decoration: the Bedford Master, the Fastolf Master, and the Master of the Munich Legenda Aurea. Together, they created harmonious visual worlds filled with detailed figures, vibrant colors, fantastic landscapes, and inventive architecture.
What is particularly fascinating is that the miniatures do not depict individual scenes but rather tell entire stories through images – often resembling small comics that unfold in a clockwise direction around a central motif. Thus, the Book of Hours becomes a medieval picture story full of life, imagination, and splendor.
Today, it is considered one of the most precious manuscripts of its time.
