Created around 1430, the Hours Book of Catherine of Cleves is considered one of the most beautiful devotional books of the Middle Ages. On 714 parchment pages, a world of images unfolds, featuring 157 intricate miniatures that deeply immerse the viewer in the everyday life and religious imagination of the 15th century – detailed, vibrant, and full of fantasy.
The anonymous "Master of Catherine of Cleves" achieved a milestone in Dutch book art with this work. Particularly fascinating is the connection between biblical scenes and lovingly depicted everyday scenes – a precursor to later genre painting.
After a tumultuous history – the work was divided in the 19th century – the Hours Book is now reunited at the Morgan Library in New York and is regarded as a highlight of late medieval book art.
