Description
The Golden Munich Psalter
At the beginning of the 13th century, a true masterpiece of book art was created in Oxford: the Golden Munich Psalter. With 91 full-page miniatures on a gold background, 24 calendar medallions, and magnificent initials, it is considered the most precious psalter ever created.
The manuscript captivates with its abundance of images – from the creation story to the life of Jesus and King David, the legendary psalmist. Unlike usual practice, the miniatures not only accompany the text but also form entire cycles of images, making the work a unique picture book of the Middle Ages.
Artistically, the psalter marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic: figures appear more natural, faces livelier, and garments softer and more flowing. Almost every page shines in gold, red, and blue – a feast for the eyes.
Today, this magnificent manuscript is preserved in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
