Sacramentary of Henry II – a masterpiece of royal book art

The Sacramentary of Henry II is one of the most precious manuscripts of the Middle Ages. Donated by the later Holy Roman Emperor Henry II for the diocese of Bamberg, founded in 1007, this splendid work was created in the famous scriptorium of the Regensburg monastery of St. Emmeram – one of the most significant centers of Ottonian book painting.

The Sacramentary is especially renowned for its extraordinary illustrations: 14 masterful miniatures, including the impressive coronation image of Henry II, magnificent throne and author portraits, as well as around 350 richly decorated initials. Gold, vibrant colors, and intricate ornaments give the manuscript an overwhelming visual impact, making it a highlight of medieval art.

Another highlight is the precious binding: on the front, an intricately crafted ivory relief depicting the crucifixion of Christ, framed in gold, and on the back, a gilded silver work featuring Pope Gregory the Great.

For centuries, this Sacramentary was used during the highest feast days in Bamberg Cathedral and was treasured as a relic. Today, the original is housed in the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
