The Codex Gisle
Around 1300, Gisela von Kerssenbrock, the choir director at the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn near Osnabrück, created an extraordinary songbook: the Codex Gisle. With nearly 1,500 hymns, it is twice as extensive as ordinary graduals and is considered one of the most significant music manuscripts of the Middle Ages.
Particularly impressive is its rich decoration: 53 magnificent initials, along with dozens more in gold, blue, and red—some so large that they depict entire scenes from the Bible and liturgy. On a golden background, figures, plant vines, and colors shine, reflecting Gisle's deep faith in a remarkable way.
The Codex was used for over 500 years at the convent of Marienbrunn and is now a jewel in the diocesan archive of Osnabrück—a resounding and radiant testament to monastic art.
