Matthäus Merian's Copper Bible (1630) – A Masterpiece of Book Art

The Copper Bible by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) is regarded as one of the most beautiful editions of the Bible from the 17th century. This magnificent New Testament, printed in elegant Fraktur type, is adorned with 77 masterfully colored copper engravings that depict biblical scenes with extraordinary detail and artistry.

Merian, one of the most significant engravers of his time, learned his craft in Zurich, Strasbourg, and Paris before settling in Frankfurt, where he established a prominent printing dynasty. His Bible was published in 1630 by the heirs of the Strasbourg publisher Lazarus Zetzner.

With its elaborately designed leather binding featuring gold embossing, metal clasps, and corner fittings, this "Copper Bible" is among the most sought-after printed works of the Early Modern period – a true masterpiece of Baroque book art.
