The Golden Munich Psalter – A Masterpiece Between Romanesque and Gothic

The Golden Munich Psalter, created around 1200, is one of the most precious devotional books of the Middle Ages. Likely produced in Oxford by three English illuminators, the Psalter impresses with a true fireworks display of colors and gold: 91 full-page miniatures, 24 calendar medallions, intricately designed initials, fantastical figures, and decorative ornamental lines make it a highlight of book art.

Unlike usual practice, the Psalter does not begin directly with the Psalms, but with visually powerful cycles from the Old and New Testaments, complemented by depictions of the Last Judgment, the miracles of Jesus, and scenes from the life of King David – the legendary author of many Psalms.

Artistically, the work marks the exciting transition from Romanesque to Gothic: less rigid figures, early attempts at realistic body representation, modeled faces, and flowing garments – a breakthrough into a new visual language, magnificently immortalized on 166 leaves. Today, this extraordinary work can be admired at the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
