Description

The Parisian Alexander Romance
Between 1420 and 1425, one of the most magnificent manuscripts of the Middle Ages was created in Paris: the Parisian Alexander Romance. On 97 richly decorated pages, 86 colorful miniatures and over 100 golden initials narrate the life and adventures of Alexander the Great.
Designed by the so-called Alexander Master, the images impress with detailed landscapes, medieval cities, animals, mythical creatures, knightly battles, and courtly life. With individual faces and lively body language, the scenes appear remarkably modern and relatable.
In the Middle Ages, Alexander was regarded as a model for knights and rulers—his stories even served to educate young princes. Thus, this manuscript was likely intended for a young reader at court.
An intriguing detail: a handwritten entry reveals that the work once belonged to King Henry VIII of England. Today, this masterpiece is preserved in the British Library in London.
