The Berry Apocalypse – Dramatic Visions of the End of the World

Around 1410, the famous book collector Jean de Berry commissioned this magnificent Apocalypse manuscript in Paris. The anonymous artist, known as the Master of the Berry Apocalypse, created 85 impressive miniatures that vividly bring to life scenes from the biblical Revelation with dramatic expressiveness and dreamlike imagery.

With radiant gold leaf, elegant initials, and a distinctive color palette of red, blue, and green, the style focuses entirely on the action in the foreground—often with sketchily suggested, almost mystical backgrounds.

The text combines excerpts from the Revelation with a commentary by the Benedictine monk Berengaudus. Over the centuries, the manuscript changed hands among famous owners until it found its current home in 1900 at the renowned Morgan Library in New York.
