The Ottheinrich Bible – The First Illustrated New Testament in German
The Ottheinrich Bible is a milestone in book art: the first illustrated New Testament in the German language. Begun around 1430 in Regensburg, the work was completed about 100 years later in the Renaissance style by the artist Mathis Gerung. The vibrant colors, gilded miniatures, and magnificent initials make it one of the most significant works of German book painting.
Its original patron, Duke Ludwig the Bearded of Bavaria-Ingolstadt, was only recently identified through a device in the book. The Bible itself has a tumultuous history, having been war booty during the Thirty Years' War and lost for centuries. Today, it is once again united in the Bavarian State Library in Munich, following spectacular repurchases.
