Created between 1510 and 1520 in Bruges, the Croy Prayer Book is one of the most fascinating works of late medieval book art. It is especially renowned for its over 200 so-called drôleries – imaginative marginal illustrations featuring hybrid creatures of human, animal, and plant.
These humorous grotesques accompany 70 magnificent miniatures, crafted by the masters Gerard Horenbout and Simon Bening – in collaboration with panel painter Gerard David. Originally created for a noblewoman of the Burgundian court, the prayer book later came into the possession of the noble family de Croy and ultimately became a jewel of the imperial collection of Prince Eugene of Savoy.
