Gero Codex – Origin and Apex of Reichenau Book Painting

The Gero Codex is one of the most significant works of Ottonian book art and is considered the oldest surviving manuscript from the famous scriptorium of the island of Reichenau. Created around the year 969 by the monk Anno for Archbishop Gero of Cologne, this magnificent Gospel codex combines the highest artistic quality with political and spiritual symbolism.

With 24 full-page miniatures, precious purple and gold pages, and countless elaborate initials in gold and silver, the Gero Codex ranks among the most luxurious manuscripts of the Middle Ages. The monumental images of the Evangelists, the Maiestas Domini, and the two impressive dedication images make it a key work in the transition from Carolingian to Ottonian art.
