The Illustrated Apocalypse of Lyon is a fascinating picture manuscript from the 15th century – and far from gloomy: Across 52 pages, it narrates the Revelation of John in 230 Latin verses, accompanied by 48 large-format miniatures that enchant rather than frighten.

Each double page follows a unique structure: Two verses present the biblical text, while two explain the image below – a thoughtful connection of text and image that is unparalleled.

The scenes – set in the world of the 15th century – consistently depict John in a radiant cloak, surrounded by richly detailed landscapes and almost ethereal figures. Even apocalyptic scenes appear gentle and full of wonder due to the delicate painting style.

This extraordinary manuscript was likely created by Barthélemy Poignare, the so-called Master of the Missale of Paul Beye – a masterpiece of miniature art that must be seen.
